I fully respect that Alex is ill but this has caused a lot of money, trauma and stress for many fans. Me and my boyfriend spent over £100 in travel each for the Birmingham gig. Surely there can be some compensation given to the fans? Maybe every fans travel fare is a little optimistic but surely a small token such as an Arctic Monkeys tour t-shirt can be arranged for all the money that each of us has lost and also the time. Not to mention how each and every one of us were obviously crazily looking forward to the Gig!

I completely respect that alex is ill and so the gig is off,but I travelled from Northern Ireland, and the flights were not cheap, it was my 18th birthday present to come over and see them in Birmingham, and instead I spent the night watching a really crap film at the cinema. I obviously can't come to the gig on the 20th, I can't afford it and now I've lost out on so much money. Are refunds on the card? Or do will you guys come serenade me in ireland saying as you didn't do ANY shows here on your 'UK' tour (yes northern Ireland is part of the uk) cheers

Get well soon Alex, grtz!!!

01.11.13 3:09 pm

If Alex has Laryngitis then they won't play Sheffield tomorrow. Google the virus. It takes at least a few days to clear.. and singing is the worst thing you can do.
If it's not Laryngitis, then someone's not being straight with us.

01.11.13 2:48 pm

All you doubters need to seriously get a grip!! The Arctic monkeys are legendary and if Alex has Laryngitis then so be it!! It is what it is. I don't doubt for 1minute that they would play if they could! You would be p'd off if they played on regardless and Alex's voice wasn't what you expected!! Illness is illness and I don't doubt for 1 minute that most of the whingers would take an enormous amount of time off work with the same complaint!! So cut them some slack!!!

First of all someone should sort out the writing box, white letters and ivory background ain't very easy to write to.

Secondly, i hope Mr Turner recovers well soon. I felt gutted as well as like many had arenged everything pripor to the gig (baby sitter, journey etc...)

It was a shocker to be honest, I thought it was a joke, but what can you do? saw the pics at the grouch and you don't look drunk or even mildly drunk so I do believe that a perfectionist band like you guys must feel gutted and waited till last minuite to cancel, shame we were already there.

I will be coming on the 20th Nov and I would love a T-Shirt as a present from you as a Thank you and as an apology a limited edition t-shirt. That would be make it up :) get well soon, i still like you!

AM5 - You've obviously misinterpreted my post. I was clearly stating to another member that THEY weren't the only ones to work hard. I was emphasising that they aren't the only ones. Perhaps you haven't been reading through the posts properly? I'm quite happy for thinking the way I do, thank you very much. You really should engage your brain when reading, you know? Of course everyone (including myself) are gutted about all this...but some comments going around are getting way below the belt about the AM and uncalled for. The lads are quite right partying now and then, they're the same age as me and a hangover is unlikely to make them cancel a gig. By the way, I'm entitled to my opinion like everyone else - just because you don't like it doesn't give you the right to tell me what to think and when to post. Man up. Have a good weekend, I'm going out to get @#$*!ed now and move on :D xxx

smudgerabbit

Sorry about the typos in my last post but I can barely see what I'm typing in the comments box. Small white font on ivory coloured background. Anyone else got that problem?

smudgerabbit

01.11.13 12:14 pm

My thoughts:
AM were disrespectful to their fans staying out till 3am on Wednesday night. By my calculations they would have been drinking for around 8 hours from the beginning of the awards night. Party animals have a lowered immune system. If Alex does indeed have Laryngitis it's likely he's caught the virus because he was run down.
He could just have the mother of all hangovers. If they play Sheffield, then it's not Laryngitis.
I agree with 8955872ppu that a goodwill gesture for the fans would be good, but I also think people should clam for their expenses. It might be the only way to make such rock stars and their managers take their responsibilities seriously. Hit their wallets.
We near to the Arena yesterday when we heard the news of the cancellation. My daughter and her friends were gutted. We spent Halloween on the M! and M42. We didn't listen to AM on the way back.

Mortip

01.11.13 11:50 am

I don't think it means you are being disloyal to the band if you are ticked off because you've lost money because of the late cancellation. The band and the management SHOULD be aware of the impact on us mere mortals. Feel slightly aggrieved that some people consider being a true am fan is limited to those who have time and money to spare. Don't think so. Get well soon Alex. Can't wait to see the rescheduled gig on 20th November, but it's going to be difficult scraping the money together to do it all again.

8955872ppu

01.11.13 11:37 am

Alex, While you are at Uni, ask your lecturer to explain the difference between fact and analogy. And you claim to be a journalist - are you also in the SAS?

abarton81

01.11.13 11:34 am

Hi 8955872ppu, if you could email me at alexbartonmedia@live.co.uk I would be willing to provide you with my University email. I am not interested in the Arctic Monkeys or trying to tarnish their name, it is the story about the 5 star hotel you booked which had been boarded up which I am interested in

AM5

01.11.13 11:22 am

Bittersugar, your arrogance amazes me. Don't you think other people work hard too? People have worked hard to pay for hotels and travel expenses just to get it thrown back in there faces. i think you should have a little think before you choose to speak again.

bittersugar

01.11.13 11:16 am

Another note to the slightly dumber half of the nation - any kind of illness can suddenly get worse or appear due to stress/strain on the body. Fact. I work VERY hard for a living (hold down two jobs and I care for someone between these) and to earn money, you're not the only one blether! I can post you a violin if you wish? Yes, you should get over it. As I've said before, people like you have obviously had it easy in life and never had a blip before. You'll get nowhere with such attitude and I honestly do pity you. Sorry, it's maybe not your fault if you see things in black and white. You should educate yourself more and perhaps live life a bit more. Wake up for @#$*! ;)

8955872ppu

01.11.13 11:12 am

Alex, thank you for the invitation, I'm not up for damaging the band, I do think the fans deserve a bit more than being taken for granted. I'm not sure how much influence the actual band members have over such issues, but I'm pretty certain if we were all given an exclusive T-shirt or something similar, that would go a long way to saying "thanks for being loyal fans."
Cost to the band could easily be written off against the gains of good PR. I suspect their hands are tied and no such offer will be forthcoming. That's one reason I am saying people should claim their loss, the management company will be adequately insured, it's not a personal attack on the band - it's basically an insurance claim.
People should not be made to feel guilty for making a claim or feel they are being disloyal to their favourite band by claiming their losses.
By the way, the only faking it group of people outnumbering the p**s heads in pubs who say they were in the SAS, is the number of internet trolls claiming to be journalists. Have a nice day.

01.11.13 10:49 am

I am sorry but Alex Turner and the lads were out till early hours in the morning the night before the Birmingham gig. They should start to take some responsibilities and grow up a little. I wasted 2 hours of my time driving there and wasted £80 on a hotel room just to be told an hour before the show starts that they will not be performing, Absolute joke lost a lot of respect for these guys.

betherzxx

01.11.13 10:48 am

II understand he has a throat infection and had to cancel, but cancelling just moments before the doors opened and 1 1/2 before show time is poor behavior. - I'm very infuriated that people were still allowed to go into the LG just to be told to leave. I understand that Alex is ill and unable to perform but Laryngitis is an illness that doesn't just come about in 10 minutes you can tell you have it upon waking up in the morning- surely he also got diagnosed with it so they didn't have to leave cancelling till last minute. Also people telling us to 'get over it' and 'get a day off work' (for the rescheduled gig) REALLY? unfortunately for some we HAVE to work to earn money - which has now gone too waste - and we cant just get a day off work. get well soon Alex/

abarton8

01.11.13 10:37 am

Hi 8955872ppu, could you please email me (alexbartonmedia@live.co.uk) regarding the hotel issue. I am a journalist in Birmingham and I am covering this story.o

8955872ppu

01.11.13 10:07 am

sadie, you are very kind with your words and very understanding, if you paid for four top quality rooms in a five start hotel - but when you arrived the hotel had been boarded up, closed down and you were told to come back in a month... would you be so understanding? The band took the money and people who cannot afford it are out of pocket. In any other professional environment compensation or a gesture of goodwill would be offered. By the way, regardless of the terms & conditions on the sale of tickets, English consumer law overrides all T&C's - people can claim for their losses and should! Not sure what the situation is in Scottish law.

sadiesmith_

01.11.13 9:40 am

It's ridiculous that everyone's moaning they obviously wanted to perform but Alex being I'll can't be helped, I'm seeing them on Saturday in sheffield and we are still to see if they are performing then! Be grateful that they have re-arranged the whole thing there's people out there that would love tickets

EllieNeary

01.11.13 9:24 am

Why don't you all stop moaning! They have arranged new dates so you will be able to see them, Alex can't help being sick he was most probably trying his best to be able to perform but wasn't allowed! I very highly doubt Arctic Monkeys would ever cancel their gig unless it was serious! Anyway, get well soon Alex xxx

arctic_k8

01.11.13 9:14 am

I was proper getting worried you'd cancel Glasgow but I'm glad we have another date to look forward to! Can't wait to see you lot perform been looking forward to it for so long, get well soon dude!

8955872ppu

01.11.13 9:14 am

Naturally, anyone who is suffering from laryngitis is not going to perform well as a singer, and although I sympathise with that, merely re-scheduling the gig to days/nights that do not match the original night is hardly giving of your best to rectify a poor situation. Many people have spent a lot more than they can actually sensibly afford and offering nothing additional to those people is poor PR for the band. Put this into context, I drove a long way for nothing last night, it hasn't gone un-noticed that the band were tweeting that the gig was "on" just a couple of hours before the cancellation announcement - which was made after the main doors were opened, fans inside and merchandise sold. The only people smiling were the security guards, they were getting an early night and being paid the same.... there should be something free for every ticket holder effected and without doubt these uber rich band members can well afford a gesture. No gesture = no respect for fans.

£100 hotel, £50 hire car, £60 fuel, 400 mile round trip, two days of work and you expect me to do this all over again! Alex, your an adult now, you know if your ill! You waited until we had all travelled and checked into our hotels????? We were walking across to the arena when you called the gig off! What drugs are you taking for your laryngitis? The same ones you were on at the mercury’s? I want my money back and will not be wasting my time, ive been a fan of yours from the start but now i can see your true colours, Alex, you’ve turned into a character from your own songs including Teddy Picker! . Wee girl in tears at the moment at the call off in Glasgow as she idolises the Band - I'm not a fan just a dad who was giving my wee lass a treat for her Christmas who cannot now afford to go to the rearranged gig..
Can't be helped as you can't sing with a bad throat.

Gutted really, drove a long way, spent a lot of money on tickets, petrol and a hotel room. Can't make the new date as I'm out of the country with work so it's all just a waste of time and money. Fair enough if he's genuinely ill but none of this washes with me, was seemingly fine the night before at the mercuries and why it was left till 18:10 to call it off? Find it very disrespectful to the fans

01.11.13 12:58 am

Honestly, a lot of people on here have had very uneventful lives. We've all been sick and it's not a rarity to become unwell quick. So what if they were seen out at 3am? They're only human like the rest of us, and need to let loose. They've always been reported as being very hard working, you think it's a piece of cake what they do? As far as I know, Alex isn't a robot or has superhuman powers to make himself immune from illness. He would've been criticised if he went on and couldn't perform well. He's being criticised now for cancelling...either way the guy couldn't win! Of course it must've been a pain finding out on such short notice the gig was cancelled. AM probably didn't want to disappoint and thought they could carry on, but people can suddenly become unwell - it's not unheard of! Some comments on here are just idiotic and impulsive. I'm certainly not made of money and have lost out on my booked hotel and train tickets for the Glasgow gig. Life never runs smoothly though, so I'll get over it. Some of you have obviously had an easy ride through life, or been wrapped in cotton wool to moan so much over something that can't be controlled. The bad mouthing ignoramuses on here can't be hardcore fans, and have very low emotional and general intelligence. Just say it like I see it. Get over it, many bands have cancelled and just refunded tickets, at least AM have rescheduled ASAP. Believe me, worse things can happen in life folks. Wake up for @#$*! ;) Looking forward to the Glasgow gig on 21st November. Get well soon Alex.

31.10.13 11:47 pm

GET WELL SOON ALEX, I CANNOT STAND ALL THESE HATERS ACCUSING THE GUYS FOR PARTYING, I SAW THE GUYS LUCKY FOR ME AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK ON THE DAY OF THERE LIVERPOOL GIG AND THEY LOOKED ABSOLUTELY KNACKERED CAUSE ALL THEY HAVE BEEN DOING IS PRESS RELEASE AND SHOWS IN THE STATES BEFORE COMING HERE AND WORKING HARD!!!!! I CANNOT STAND ALL THESE PEEPS THAT HAVE JUST JUMPED ON THE TRENDY TRAIN CAUSE OF AM AND PROBABLY DON'T EVEN HAVE ALL THE ARCTICS MATERIAL, I SAW THE PHOTOS FROM SOHO AND NO ONE LOOKED HIGH OR DRUNK TO ME, IT'S DRAINING HARD WORK DOING WHAT THOSE LADS DO, SO SHOW SOME FCKN SUPPORT FOR OUR SHEFF BOYS!

Batter

31.10.13 11:39 pm

Yes some of these comments are disgraceful and noone can help illness, but cancellation minutes before the doors open is unacceptable and unproffesionnal. It would appear that comments made about cost being irrelevant are made by people with no concept of reality. Fans come in all shapes and sizes (pockets included). !!!!

djp96

31.10.13 11:27 pm

some of these comments are disgraceful, yes they cancelled last minute for birmingham however glasgow's cancelled in advance obviously to prevent disappointment and for the health of Alex. Not only this but they've rescheduled as quick as they possibly could do meaning people don't I have to wait around long for answers. I sat waiting for five hours outside of the lg arena but definitely don't regret it; surely everybody would prefer a rescheduled gig showing quality vocals in comparison to a gig on time with little or no vocals? Also extra expenses aren't the end of the world, real fans would be willing to pay, wait and enjoy a great performance despite the inconvenience caused!

Batter

31.10.13 11:24 pm

Bought tickets through viagago £100 each (what a rip off and wouldn.t use again) for last friday at earls court , who at the last minute couldn't provide the tickets and were replaced with ticekts for tonights , so having travelled 3 hours to get to LG arena tonight were let down for a second time - a bit of joke i think - not sure its that funny though. Have 3 very disappointed birthday boys , and now offered a school night as a replacement. Think the AM's may need a new manager at this rate, maybe i could be a contender , they may need to grow up a bit quick though. Who after all put the, where they are - think boys think.

scott1105

31.10.13 11:15 pm

Think people should just chill out. I drove for 2 hours. Was 15mins away when i heard the news. My first thought was hope there ok. And turned around and went home. I think a lot of the people on here posting are just trolls jumping on the bandwagon. Id rather they cancel them him damage his voice and not sing again. Yes it was probably bought on by last night. But these boys work harder then most people think. They don't just turn up and play. They had a night off to let there hair down so they did. You've never been out late before you haters? So you've gotta book another day of work. And? So you booked a hotel. Enjoy your day off. Relax. Go Xmas shopping or something. As for not cancelling sheffield. they will probably see how he is tomorrow If these problems have made you hate the guys then was you really much of a fan in the first place. I understand your angry but you will get over it and laying into the guys you thought were good enough to want to go and see live is not helping any thing.

SOMEONE GET THIS MAN THE BEST GODDAMN HEALTHCARE MONEY CAN BUY! It sucks that Glasgow has been postponed to a thursday night rather than friday but at least they are still going to be playing rather than just refunding the tickets and not performing at all, which some artists do… People who are complaining need to realise there is nothing else they can do, i mean would you really rather they went on with the show and for Alex to not be able to sing?! Yes it @#$*!ing sucks how people have already spent money on travel and hotels but it can't be helped he has gotten laryngitis for @#$*! sake

Some of the crawlers on here make me sick. I bet they all were nicely tucked up in doors when were all being let down at the last minute. Again if your ill your ill that can't be helped. But the short notice is unacceptable. Was last nights performance at the mercurys prerecorded then? Or was that not them leaving the Groucho at 3am this morning not the sort of behaviour of an ill man.

So didn't you know about this earlier today. If you were so ill surely you could have let us know a lot sooner, maybe before we all paid £100 to check in hotels. So who do we speak to about this, as a minimum you should be footing the bill for everyone who has had to pay for rooms they didn't need. I understand people get ill but you were out last night and only let us know 1 hour and a half before show time. This isn't on. I think if you can produce a receipt for your hotel you should be taking care of it due to the late notice. We didn't check in until 4oclock and you were tweeting the support band if you had the foresight/decency to let us all know your fans would have saved on paying money that is a lot to the normal person., at least the fans going to Glasgow have adequate warning. Oh and another week night nice one that really makes it easier for us all to find the time of work again.

What do you want them to do he can't sing with laryngitis can he I'm sure it states in the small print on the ticket that dates are subject to change I can see why people are disappointed but @#$*! happens

Can't believe some of the things I'm reading, would you prefer they played the show without him singing or something? There's no other alternative

I really do hope Alex's voice is rested for Sheffield actually. Glasgow will be the last night of the tour then and we will @#$*!ing wreck the place.

What about the hundreds of pounds us and others have each spent on train tickets and hotels when they could of been cancelled if you told people earlier ..... Whole situation has been Badly managed and have let your fans down big time and even after arranging the gig again so quick it's not easy for everyone to arrange to come again what with the 2 days off work, trains and hotel costs etc ..... You and Your management should of dealt with this a lot better !

I know there has been a lot of negativity regarding tonight's postponement and trust me having travelled over 100 miles to be there tonight I was in tears! But I just wanted to say thank you for getting this sorted and I am amazed and ecstatic about how soon the rescheduled show is. Get well Alex, looking forward to the 20th November!!
